Team Spotlight: Introducing CDS’ Regional Hygiene Team
For their commitment to professional development and ongoing improvements to our hygiene processes across the country, CDS thanks Sam Heron and Ann-Marie Malkamaki for their ongoing support and leadership.
Sam Heron, Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH)
Sam graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2012 with a Bachelor of Dental Science (B.D.S.), and from the University of Alberta in 2019 with a Master’s in Medical Sciences (M. Sc.), focusing on dental hygiene. She began her career as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) at Glenora Dental Family Dentistry, located in Edmonton, Alberta, in 2013 and began her career as a Regional Hygiene Team Member with CDS in January 2020. She is currently the Chairperson of the Registration Committee at the College of Registered Dental Hygienists of Alberta (CRDHA).
In her spare time, Sam likes to work on several crafting projects including cross-stitching, embroidery, felting, quilting, and soap-making. She loves spending time with her parents, three sisters, five nieces and nephews (soon to be six!), her cat, Jagger, and her partner, Dan.
Sam’s thesis focused on assessing the health of the gingiva, and in her spare time as a graduate student, she taught as a clinical instructor at the University of Alberta. She believes that these experiences provide her with the foundations to assist CDS with improving patient care by working to ensure patients have a positive and thorough visit when they visit a hygienist at CDS clinic. Sam is looking forward to working with all the hygienists at CDS clinics across the country, to move the dental hygiene profession to the next level by creating a memorable patient experience.

A graduate of Niagara College, Ann-Marie brings to the table over fifteen (15) years of experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) and over twenty (20) years of experience in the dental industry generally.
Ann-Marie is passionate about educating patients on oral care and looks forward to continually supporting CDS as it works to develop a cohesive professional network of hygiene teams from CDS clinics across the country. Ann-Marie understands that communication, networking, and support are important facets of professional development, and uses her experience to facilitate hygiene support at our clinics.
Ann-Marie enjoys reading, watching movies, collecting Funko pop dolls, and anything Harry Potter. Most recently, she has become a proud owner of a new puppy named Spike Jacob.
Joining the regional hygiene team has allowed Ann-Marie to use her hygiene skills, practical experience, and education from a fresh new perspective. As Ann-Marie works to support hygiene teams and CDS operations across Canada, her objectives are to continually posit CDS’ hygiene teams towards the following goals: the support of patient health, individualized patient care experiences, and quality dental care.
